Jims Austin A40 Somerset came in recently for some overdue TLC with the Fuel and Ignition System. Jim has been a friend and customer of John Woods for over 20 years.

The Austin A40 Somerset is an automobile which was produced by the Austin Motor Company from 1952 until 1954. The Somerset replaced the Austin A40 Devon and, as a body-on-frame car, it was comparable in size to its predecessor. It shared a number of components with the Devon which included a similar 1.2 litre straight-4 pushrod engine. The Somerset’s engine was updated to produce 42 hp (31 kW), compared to the Devon’s 40 hp (30 kW), giving the car a top speed of 70 mph (110 km/h).(WIKIPEDIA)

There is a fantastic Victory Model 1:18 Scale version of the car as well:-

First job was to remove the carburettor and check it over. A new refurbished Carburettor was sourced and fitted. At the same time we agreed with the customer that the petrol tank should be drained, removed and sent off for refurbishment as years of use had left it quite rusty inside and the rust particles were what was affecting the running of the Carburettor.

It was also decided that an electronic ignition system would be installed. Here at John Woods Motorcare we recommend PowerSpark Ignition Ltd’s products. Why? Powerspark’s patented electronic ignition has no mechanical parts, so there’s much less to go wrong than with traditional points. Every spark is controlled precisely and accurately allowing for smoother running and improved reliability. The kit uses a simple magnetic trigger and optimises dwell to provide a reliable and consistent spark across the rev range. It is easy to install and maintenance free. Electronic ignition will give your classic car better starting and smoother running. It also has built in ‘over current protection’ that shuts down the system, preventing component damage if the ignition is left switched on and the engine not running. It is installed relatively easily and is all hidden inside the distributor with just one extra wire coming out onto the coil. The best part is that should it fail (we’ve never had one fail yet!) the original Points, RotorArm and Condensor can be kept in the glove box and installed within minutes.
